How to Become a Crane Operator

  1. You need to decide what type of crane you want to operate. There are many types and models of cranes: articulating/knuckle-boom, mobile, telescopic boom truck, telescoping boom trucks and articulating crane, all telescoping boom crane and lattice boom, tower crane and mobile hydraulic crane. From there, you can now choose the training program that suits your need.

  2. Find a community college or technical school where you can enroll for a training course. Listed above are the crane operator schools where you make an inquiry of your requirement.

  3. Complete the training course. The course covers a large number of topics, from current legislation, safety aspects to crane maintenance procedures. Upon completion of the training program, the trainee will undergo a series of tests, both written and practical exams will be administered to measure the knowledge acquired from the course. When successful, the trainee will receive his certification.

  4. Wannabe crane operators can now seek an apprenticeship or on-the-job training program. Usually, the apprenticeship is being offered by the local International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE).

  5. Though some states may require licensure and certification, depending on the workplace and the type of machinery, generally to become a licensed operator, you need to pass standards of the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) or the Crane Institute of America (CIC). The trainee must pass the written exam and practical test to get a certification from this organization.

  6. Get employed as a crane operator. Once you’ve finished the certification and licensing process, you can now seek employment. You can get work in construction sites, in a warehouse environment, mining companies or in manufacturing business.

Requirements to Become a Crane Operator

Becoming a crane operator doesn’t have the strict requirement. Though, generally, you need to attain some prerequisites such as:

  • Being physically fit as this job requires toughness. You will be required to undergo a physical exam to ensure your fitness.
  • Formal training and certification are attained through enrolling in a program offered by a school.
  • State licensing but as of this writing, Alabama doesn’t require an operator to have a license. But this could change, it would be better to check with your local government.
  • Completion of an apprenticeship program or on-the-job training to get experience and skills needed for the job.
  • If you will be working in construction sites, then you need to be certified by a school accredited by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) to become suitable for that type of work environment.

Crane Operator NCCCO Certification Requirement

As per OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC, certain types of crane operators like those who work in construction sites or conduct construction-related work must be certified by a recognized body such as the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO). Operators can be certified through an audited employer training course.

The rampant accidents that happened in construction sites, trigger the implementation of this new requirement. Basically, safety will always be a priority to prevent loss of life, injuries and damage to property.

Getting a certification from a school that is NCCCO accredited will ensure that you are qualified to work in construction and you adhered to the 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC OSHA regulation.

The NCCCO certification is very important for you to get employment as a crane operator in many types of industries. You just need to invest some amount of money and allot a portion of your time and effort.
